Harlem Shake in MENA: move your pelvis to raise your voice

After slowing office productivity around the world, the evolution of the “Harlem Shake” – from a dance to a song, to a viral video craze – took the pelvis dance into a new dimensions: at the end of last February, hard line Salafi fundamentalists tried to stop the recording of a Harlem Shake video at a language school in Tunis.

The chaotic pelvis-thrusting dance has been mimicked across the world after a group of Australian teenagers uploaded a video of themselves dancing the Harlem Shake in early February. After them, Norwegian soldiers, Australian miners, basketball players from the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat, football players from Manchester City and Swansea City, CNN staff and many others have performed the dance and published their videos on the web.

The videos last between 30 and 32 seconds and feature part of the song Harlem Shake created by American DJ Baauer. Usually, a video begins with one person, often masked, dancing alone for 15 seconds, surrounded by other people apparently not paying attention to him. When the bass drops, the entire crows start a crazy convulsive dance for the next 15 seconds. Even if the “meme” – the way in which a concept that is spread from person to person via internet is called -, doesn’t represent the original Harlem Shake dance (originally called the albee and introduced in 1981 by a Harlem resident named “Al B”), the video contributed to place the song to hit No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, thanks to a new tabulation formula which counts YouTube play songs, replacing the previous viral success of GanGnam Style.

Tunisia’s experience with the video began with a group of students at Tunis’ El Menzah high school. They produced their own version, which then spawned a host of copycat videos all over the Country. In the El Menzah’s video the students dance. Some in their underwear, some dressed as bearded Salafis and some as Gulf emirs. The Tunisian Minister of Education, Abdellatif Abid, didn’t like the performance and announced an investigation of the principal of the school for allowing the making of an “indecent” video. Two days after, a group of university students protested in front of the Education Ministry against the minister’s investigation, performing the Harlem Shake. Many other viral videos from Tunisia are appearing on these days on youtube.

As it happened with the terrible images of Mohammed Bouazizi‘s death, El Menzah’s Harlem Shake landed in Egypt. Hundreds of protesters, mostly men, while chanting “leave, leave” danced outside the headquarters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo. The video was streamed live to the Web. The protest followed the arrest of four pharmaceutical students charged with violating the Country’s decency laws by dancing the Harlem Shake in their underwear.

Once again a viral meme could be “like a fever” for young people that, in Middle East and North Africa, want to raise their voice against old and new regimes. As many of them said: “This is our language, this is the way in which we demand for our space and for a real democracy. This is what we are working and fighting for during the last two years”. Now they – and we – are waiting for a more “creative” answer from the Islamist rulers. The “meme war” has just started.
______________
