About Us

Logo Tondo

FocusMéditerranée is an independent online magazine, born in 2011 from the vision of photojournalist Silvia Dogliani. We serve as a bridge between the two shores of the Mediterranean. On one side, there is Europe with its lifestyles, cultural projects, and Western business models; on the other, North Africa, with its emerging markets, geopolitical tensions, and rich cultures aspiring to transcend the boundaries that confine them. FocusMéditerranée aims to be an active platform for dialogue between young university students (Med Forum) and individuals seeking opportunities in the Mediterranean (Job And Future). The magazine is registered with the Milan Court (No. 182 on 31/3/2011), confirming its commitment to transparency and journalistic integrity.

Contents

News and In-depth stories

We dive into the Mediterranean region through articles, photographs, microblogs, and videos, crafted with passion by Italian and international journalists and photographers. We explore the complexity of the region through three key sections:

  • Society We delve into social models and welfare, fostering a dialogue on the possibility of importing or exporting meaningful experiences.
  • Migration: We narrate authentic stories of migrants, analyze the control of migration flows, delve into issues of security, and explore innovative projects for coexistence and integration..
  • Culture: utilizziamo gli scambi culturali come strumento per migliorare il dialogo e promuovere una conoscenza reciproca più profonda.

Opinions

We promote dialogue and discussion. The “Silcences ” section serves as a beacon, shedding light on lesser-known events, such as Europe’s economic interests in North Africa, revealing projects of “exploitation” behind future development strategies. Some articles are further enriched by “My Truth” where the author abandons the impartial role of a journalist to share a personal reflection on the topic, providing an additional perspective for debate.

Not Just News

Services

FocusMéditerranée also provides practical services through the Job and Future. section. We offer readers seeking employment opportunities in Europe or North Africa useful information, such as curriculum vitae preparation, industry trends, market research, and initial steps to start a business.

Our publication is not only an informative platform but also a meeting point for discussion and exchange. We encourage readers to participate actively, inviting them to comment on published articles or share opinions and contributions in the Med Forum section. Here, we gather personal opinions, testimonials, grievances, and new proposals for dialogue, giving space to voices often overlooked by more traditional information channels.

Note on Images and videos

Some of the photos and videos published on FocusMéditerranée have been sourced from the internet and are considered public domain. In the event that authors do not approve of their publication, we kindly ask for notification to the editorial team by sending an email to [email protected]. Transparency and respect for copyright are fundamental principles for us.

Sections

Society

In this section, we are committed to providing a balance of stories (not always negative) and in-depth analyses, with the goal of informing, inspiring, and stimulating reflection. We give voice to the various facets of the Mediterranean. The voices of the society in which we live also take shape through columns:

  • Egypt and the Middle East Past and Present: A journey through time proposed by American reporter Norbert Schiller, drawing a fascinating parallel between the Middle East of yesterday and today, with a particular focus on Egypt.
  • Le Bistrot parisien: A cozy Parisian meeting place conceived by photojournalist Silvia Dogliani, where debates unfold on what is happening in France and the Mediterranean.
  • MedMedia: Italian sociologist Giulia Aubry explores the dynamics of media in the Mediterranean. She analyzes how narratives and representations influence our perception of the region, offering a critical and in-depth perspective.

Migrations

In  this space, we are committed to promoting understanding, diversity, and social cohesion. Here, the floor is given to individuals from North Africa living in Europe (Italy, France, Spain, …) or those from North Africa who aspire to undertake the journey to reach the other shore.

Through engaging articles, photographs, and videos, these “migrants” share their perspectives and unique experiences, crucial for suggesting new solutions and improving the challenges of the integration process.

We focus not only on the “positive” stories of those who have succeeded but also on the “less positive” stories of those forced to grapple daily with the still-present gaps in Europe, both legislatively and socially.

Powerful and dramatic narratives find a place alongside the “rosy” microblog, Aziza’s diary, ua humorous note from the publication. The personal and emotional journey of journalist Aziza Al-Karima provides a glimpse into the daily challenges of a mixed love; a touch of levity in an often complex context.

Culture

In this vibrant and dynamic space, we explore how culture has the power to transform our way of seeing the world, becoming a beacon of inspiration and a bridge that connects the diversities of our societies. Culture, in this sense, becomes a catalyst for progress, a universal language that unites communities sharing the shores of this sea rich in history and stories.

This space is dedicated to events, exhibitions, books, photographs, and projects that embrace culture and cultures, reflecting the facets of societies overlooking the Mediterranean. In constant creative evolution, culture becomes a powerful means of reflection and democratic exercise for citizenship; a valuable tool that elevates dialogue and promotes mutual understanding between the two shores of the Mare Nostrum.

Silences

In this section, we are committed to exposing what has fallen into oblivion, restoring a voice to narratives that deserve to be rediscovered. We believe that only through constant attention and a willingness to listen beyond momentary clamor can one fully understand the context and relevance of often forgotten or neglected events.

This window illuminates lesser-known stories, curiosities, and forgotten and less widely circulated events, such as the economic interests of Western powers in North Africa. These narratives – often relegated to silence after being emphasized by the media only when they “made news,” – are now unearthed by FocusMéditerranée. We believe that facts should not speak only at the moment of their birth; to fully understand them, it is necessary to follow them over time.

Med Forum

In this section, we give a voice to our readers and their opinions by publishing the most significant contributions sent to the editorial team: personal experiences, testimonials, reports, and suggestions. The journalist allows the readers to guide, reclaiming the tool that blogs and social networks excel at – sharing comments and ideas – attributing it the appropriate authority.

The purpose of this section is to promote debate and discussion, creating an open space where the voices of readers become an integral part of journalistic discourse. Additionally, the Med Youth Forum is the microblog within this section, dedicated to young university students. Born from the desire of FocusMéditerranée and Professor Luigi Ruggerone, a lecturer at the Università Cattolica di Milano, to listen to the perspective of the youth. The pilot project involved students from the Emerging Markets Economics course at the Università Cattolica di Milano in the debate on relations between countries bordering the Mediterranean.

MediterraneanVoices and NotOnlyMed

In these sections, voices become connections, bridges that unite our human experiences and invite us to explore otherwise unknown worlds.

Mediterranean Voices: These are the voices that tell – or have told – FocusMéditerranée’s readers “Mediterranean stories” and beyond:

  1. Tunisia-Italia, andata e ritorno (Tunisia-Italy, Round Trip): A tale by Mohamed Ben Abdelmalek of dreams and hopes; an ode to Tunisian migrants embarking on the journey to the “other shore,” with uncertainties about staying or returning.
  2. Lettere da Tel Aviv (Letters from Tel Aviv): A precious reflection on changes in the Arab world, seen from within, comes from documentary filmmaker Beatrice Dina, who, living in Israel, offers a unique and intimate perspective on how these dynamics influence her view.
  3. Guerre e paci ((Wars and Peaces): An in-depth analysis by journalist and military sociologist Giulia Aubry on social changes in crisis areas, enriched by her field experience, guides us through the complex dynamics of wars and peace.
  4. In scena e fuori scena (On Stage and Behind the Scenes): Angelo Redaelli and Valentina Pensato provide a different approach to the world of entertainment. Beyond being a source of pleasure and entertainment, taking us behind the scenes reveals it as a powerful tool for reflection.
  5. Donne verso l’integrazione (Women towards integration): Alessandra Bin presents a collection of testimonies from foreign women trying to integrate into Italy, offering an authentic and touching perspective on the challenges and triumphs of this journey.

NotOnlyMed: In this section, we broaden our scope beyond the Mediterranean, exploring global issues and perspectives that go beyond the confines of the region. Stay tuned for insightful stories and analyses that connect us to the wider world.
